Ironside Crosses
The Cross has a rich and varied history and has been used in many cultures. It has been around since before christianity, and has been used as a symbol of pride, honor, protection, and persecution. Of the many forms of the Cross, the Latin, Celtic, Greek, and the Maltese are the most common. The Egyptian cross, called the Ankh (cross with a circle on top) represents life and regeneration. The Maltese Cross began as a symbol for hospitallers during the crusades. The Maltese cross is also used as a symbol of protection by Firefighters.

I spent many hours doing research on the internet and at the library finding the different manifestations of this symbol. I also spent a lot of time drawing the icons with mathematical precision.

The name Ironside comes from the days of Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector of England (possibly a very distant relative of mine). Cromwell was a Puritan who used a thrown together army dubbed the Ironsides to overthrow the rule of Charles I.

My goal with this font was simply to make available as many cross symbols as possible. Ironside contains 174 cross symbols. Most of the designs have both a rectangular and square version.
